Inspired by the true story of the 1899 Newsboys' Strike, Newsies Jr. is a high-energy musical filled with unforgettable songs, dynamic choreography, and a powerful message about the strength of young people working together to create change. When newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer raises prices at the expense of New York City's newsboys, a group of determined young workers bands together to fight back. Led by the charismatic Jack Kelly, the newsies discover that their voices matter and that even the most powerful institutions can be challenged when people stand together. Featuring beloved songs such as Carrying the Banner, King of New York, and Seize the Day, this exciting musical celebrates courage, leadership, perseverance, and the power of community.

At ACT, Newsies Jr. is more than a musical; it is an opportunity for young performers to explore what it means to advocate for themselves, support one another, and recognize the impact that ordinary people can have when they work toward a common goal.

Tuition

Because rehearsals begin shortly after registration opens, full tuition of $650 is due at the time of registration.

Artistic Expectations

Newsies Jr. is an energetic, ensemble-driven musical that combines acting, singing, and movement in a fast-paced and exciting rehearsal process. Participants will be challenged to develop strong performance skills while working collaboratively to tell a story that relies on the strength of the entire cast.

This production is designed to help performers build confidence, strengthen stage presence, and develop the teamwork skills that are essential both on stage and beyond it. Whether performing as a featured character or as part of the larger ensemble, every student plays an important role in bringing the story to life.

Students should come ready to work hard, support one another, and embrace the joy of creating something bigger than themselves.

Content & Themes

Newsies Jr. explores themes of leadership, courage, social responsibility, teamwork, and standing up for what is right. Through the lens of a true historical event, students will examine how young people can create meaningful change in their communities when they find their voice and work together.

The show contains mild conflict and discussions of economic hardship, labor rights, and social inequality, all presented in an age-appropriate manner.
